S-Works Tarmac SL8

“The Tarmac SL8 isn’t just the fastest Tarmac ever - it’s the fastest race bike in the world.”

Specialized's philosophy behind the SL8 is that a modern road bike shouldn't be specialized in just one aspect, but rather find the perfect balance between aero, weight, and stiffness – making it faster everywhere: uphill, on flats, and in sprints.

Description

More about the S-Works Tarmac SL8

The Specialized S-Works Tarmac SL8 is designed as the ultimate all-round road bike. In this model, Specialized combines aerodynamics, low weight, and extreme stiffness in one platform. The result is a bike that climbs as efficiently as it accelerates on flat terrain, while remaining exceptionally stable at high speeds.

The frame utilizes a new generation of carbon lay-up and a highly optimized front-end design. The slimmer head tube and redesigned fork construction reduce air resistance, while keeping the overall frame weight extremely low. This creates a road bike that doesn't specialize in one terrain, but excels everywhere – from long mountain passes to fast criteriums.

A platform designed for pure performance

The geometry of the Tarmac SL8 focuses on maximum efficiency and direct power transfer. Every pedal stroke is directly converted into speed, while the bike remains comfortable enough for long rides.

Thanks to the perfect balance between stiffness and control, the bike feels responsive during accelerations and remains stable on fast descents and technical turns. This makes it a favorite platform for riders looking for a bike that can handle both races and long sportive rides.

Why the Tarmac SL8 is popular for custom builds

Many riders choose the S-Works Tarmac SL8 as the basis for a custom build because the frame offers an exceptionally high level of performance while also allowing for great freedom in component selection. The platform provides an ideal foundation to completely tailor a bike to riding style, weight, and personal preferences.

With a custom build, the bike can, for example, be assembled with a specific groupset, a high-end wheelset, or an ultralight cockpit. This creates a bike that not only technically perfectly matches the rider but is also visually completely unique.

For riders who want to get the most out of their equipment, the Tarmac SL8 is therefore more than just a road bike – it is a perfect starting point to build a dream bike entirely to their own specifications.

Perfect balance between aerodynamics and weight

The S-Works Tarmac SL8 is designed according to one philosophy: to be faster everywhere. The frame combines extremely low weight with highly optimized aerodynamic tube shapes. This allows the bike to climb exceptionally efficiently, while performing just as impressively on flat terrain and at high speed.

Direct power transfer and sharp handling

The S-Works carbon frame is designed for maximum stiffness around the bottom bracket and head tube. This efficiently converts every watt into speed, and the bike responds extremely directly to accelerations, sprints, and rapid changes of direction. This combination of stiffness and control gives riders a lot of confidence at high speeds.

Groups

Your bike's drivetrain largely determines its shifting feel, weight, and performance. That's why we only offer the best options on the market. You can choose from groupsets by Shimano, SRAM, or Campagnolo. Whether you prefer electronic precision, wireless technology, or the character of Italian shifting – we build your Tarmac SL8 exactly to your specifications.

The S-Works Tarmac SL8 was developed as the ultimate all-round racing bike: light, aerodynamic, and extremely efficient. This means the groupset must seamlessly match this character. It's not just about shifting, but about maximizing every watt you produce – from acceleration to top speed.

If you choose Shimano Dura-Ace Di2, you benefit from an unparalleled combination of precision, speed, and reliability. Shifting under full load is effortless, which is essential during sprints, attacks, and intense climbs.

With SRAM Red AXS, you opt for a completely wireless system with a clean and minimalist finish. The 12-speed setup and flexible gearing make it easy to maintain the perfect cadence, regardless of the terrain. Ideal for riders who want to combine technology and ease of use.

For those who value exclusivity and a unique shifting feel, Campagnolo is a distinctive choice.

The result is a Tarmac SL8 that not only performs exceptionally on paper but also feels perfect on the road – direct, efficient, and fully tailored to you as a rider.

Wheels

Wheel choice on the S-Works Tarmac SL8 is crucial to unleash the full potential of this all-round road bike. The frame is designed as a perfect balance between weight, stiffness, and aerodynamics – and the right wheelset amplifies precisely those characteristics.

Developed as a complete unit with Roval

The Tarmac SL8 was fundamentally developed in conjunction with Roval wheelsets. In many high-end builds and even in the professional peloton, the bike is ridden as standard with Roval Rapide CLX wheelsets, which underlines how well this combination works in practice.

This integration ensures that the frame and wheels are aerodynamically matched, resulting in maximum efficiency at high speeds.

The perfect balance: aero + lightweight

Roval wheelsets, such as the Rapide CLX (III), are known for their unique balance between aerodynamics and low weight. They combine deep rims with a relatively low total weight, allowing you to benefit from speed on the flats and immediate acceleration on climbs and sprints.

Why we recommend Roval

For the S-Works Tarmac SL8, we strongly recommend Roval wheelsets. Not only because of their performance, but because these wheels were specifically developed in line with Specialized's philosophy: maximum speed in real-world conditions.

Additional upgrades

In addition to the standard configuration, optional upgrades are also available for a custom build to further refine your bike. These upgrades can lead to better performance, lower weight, or an even more exclusive finish.

Ceramic bearings

A popular upgrade is the use of ceramic bearings in, for example, the bottom bracket, jockey wheels, or wheel hubs. Ceramic bearings have less friction than standard steel bearings, which can result in a smoother drivetrain and a small gain in efficiency and wattage.

High-end component upgrades

Many riders choose to further upgrade certain components, such as lighter cassettes, carbon bottle cages, titanium bolts, or high-performance jockey wheels. This can help reduce overall weight and give the bike an even more exclusive look.

Performance-oriented optimization

Some upgrades are specifically aimed at maximum performance. Examples include aerodynamic cockpit solutions, high-end wheelsets, or special coatings on components that reduce friction.

These upgrades are completely optional and are often chosen by riders who want to optimize their bike down to the smallest detail. When configuring your custom build, we are happy to advise you on which upgrades will truly make a difference for your riding style and goals.

Bike jewelry

We often refer to the final step in assembling a custom bike as bike jewelry. These are small, high-quality details that give your bike an extra exclusive look and elevate the finish to an even higher level.

Power meter integration

If you want to seriously analyze your performance, you can have The Bike Broker equip your bike with a power meter. This is one of the most valuable upgrades for training and performance improvement.

A power meter accurately measures how many watts you are pedaling. As a result, you no longer train by feel, but by objective data. This allows you to train more effectively, accurately track your progress, and manage your energy more efficiently during long rides or races.

Aesthetic upgrades

This can include titanium bolts, anodized spacers, premium derailleur pulleys, or special top caps. These subtle details give your bike a unique look and make the build completely personal.

Finish and exclusivity

Bike jewelry is primarily about the finishing touch. These are small components that refine the look of your bike and perfectly match the rest of your build.

Fully personalized

Because these parts are often available in different colors and materials, you can fine-tune the style of your bike down to the smallest details.

Bike jewelry is completely optional, but for many riders, this is the final step to truly making their custom build unique.

Total freedom in color and finish

The Tarmac SL8 can be built in a wide range of color schemes and finishes, allowing you to fully customize the bike to your personal style and preferences.

Custom build reviews

Two weeks ago, I picked up my new SWORKS Tarmac SL7 from The Bike Broker. I was planning to just buy a frame and build it up myself with other parts from my previous bike. Because he asked early on about my plans for the frame (out of pure interest), he was able to think along fantastically and gave excellent advice. This gave me confidence in the seller. Ultimately, The Bike Broker also built my bike. Very satisfied with how this went. In between, he kept me well informed about the progress of building the bike through photos and relevant questions. I've already ridden the SL7 a few times; it's really a top-notch bike.

I had Ferry build my bike. A very pleasant and fun experience, resulting in my dream bike. Ferry takes ample time to discuss the options and is easily reachable for questions. The bike was assembled superbly, clearly demonstrating his knowledge and experience. Top-notch, highly recommended!

Can highly recommend Ferry. Had an initial conversation with him on a potential build and when I decided to pull the trigger he accommodated all my wishes and found me a frame and fully built bike within a month. Ended up with a customized build with mixed parts and he even took care of reselling some of the surplus stuff for me. Top bloke and great service, and always happy to chat about bikes when you drop by!

Ferry from the bike broker made the impossible possible. I was able to fully customize my dream bike thanks to Ferry's connections and knowledge!
Friendly and honest service, a hard-working top guy!
