Mountain biking in the Netherlands and Belgium is becoming more popular every year. Because Corona is in the world, we see a significant increase on the trails. To give you some great tips, we have made a selection of each Dutch province and provide a brief explanation of the trails.
The top of North Holland routes is the “Schoorl” route. This route has beautiful varied sections in which you will find height differences, vicious climbs and challenging sections that will test your technique.
With climbs of the Zwarte Blink and the Schoorlse Nok you will find a few climbs that will test even the trained biker. The route is approximately 15 km long and has an elevation gain of 302 metres. With an average rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars, this is one of the most beautiful and challenging routes in the Netherlands.
Recommended bike: a full suspension bike with possibly a dropper post. See our current stock.
One of the most beautiful routes in South Holland is the Bergschenhoek route. The route is located close to Rotterdam and is beautifully surrounded by water. With its 6.5 km and 206 meters of altitude, the route is a fun and challenging route. This route also has steep climbs and fast descents.
The route has a few fun challenges such as a Skinny line, a see-saw, and a number of drops. This makes this route a challenging route, where your technique can be improved. The route scores an average of 4 out of 5 stars, making it one of the best routes in South Holland.
Recommended bike: a hardtail with possibly a dropper post for the challenging features. See our current stock.
One of the best routes in Zeeland is the Westerschouwen route. This route is not far from the Western Scheldt tunnel and is one of the nicest places for mountain biking in Zeeland.
The route is 6.7 km long and has an elevation gain of 164 meters. Because the route often consists of sand, this route is ideal for driving in the wetter periods of the year. The route is located in a beautiful wooded area and consists of many climbs and short descents. With its 4.2 out of 5 stars, this route certainly makes it worth trying out.
Recommended bike: a full suspension bike. This is ideal for use in the sand, jumps, drops and the playful surface. See our current stock.
In our opinion, the best route in North Brabant is the Millheeze route. This route was recently constructed. The route has a very playful character and is certainly challenging for those who want to improve their skills.
The route has many curves, rollers, bridges, tabletops and northshore elements. The route is 1.8 km long and has an elevation gain of 30 metres. The route receives no less than 4.4 out of 5 possible stars.
Recommended bike: a full suspension to absorb jumps and drops and for ideal traction. See our current stock.
Utrecht... yes, where shall we start? There are so many top routes on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, but we were still able to make a choice. Our choice fell on Amerongen.
The Amerongen route is truly beautiful to drive. The location in the old forests and the nature are truly beautiful. The route is very challenging, with many playful parts with a carrot here and there. But in our opinion, the best parts are the beautiful climbs that are of course accompanied by a beautiful descent. One of the absolute trendsetters is the Harry Slinger. The Harry Slinger segment is a super cool section where you have to pay close attention not to be thrown off the bike.
This route can also be looped with Leersum, but we think Amerongen is the most fun to drive. The route is 18.4 km long and has an elevation gain of 374 meters. The route has a 4.2 out of 5 possible stars.
Recommended bike: a full suspension bike with a dropper post for the Harry crank and other features. See our current stock.
Our favorite track in the polder of Flevoland is the track Roggenbotzand in Dronten. The route is close to the Ketelmeer and the fox lake and has a beautiful location.
The route is perfect for everyone and has some very fun challenges that will also be a challenge for the advanced biker. The route does not have many elevation meters for its length and unfortunately does have many long straight stretches. The Rockgarden is a fun challenge for enthusiasts. There is also a split in the route so that the Rockgarden does not have to be taken. The route is 21.2 km long and has an elevation gain of 84 meters. The route gets a 4 out of 5 possible stars.
Recommended bike: A hardtail. There are many flat sections, but of course a full suspension is also in its element here.
A great track that should of course not escape the list is the route in Appelscha. Are you looking for a real challenge? Then you can really have fun on this route. The route is located in the old, overgrown dune areas of Appelscha.
The route is short at 4.3 kilometers, but has no paved or flat sections. The route consists purely of technical single tracks, combined with tough climbs. This route can be looped with the 17.3 kilometer long route from Appelscha. This creates a route with a total length of more than 21 kilometers. The route scores a 4.2 out of 5 possible stars and is one of the nicest tracks in the Netherlands.
Bike recommendation: you can do very well with a hardtail.
The highlight of Drenthe is the Gieten-Gasselte route and is one not to be missed. The mountain bike route between Gieten and Borger is located on the Drentse Hondsrug. The Hondsrug is an ancient natural elevation that originated around the Ice Age. The area was originally a heathland area, but nowadays almost the entire area is wooded.
The route is very challenging and largely leads through the woods. You will find wide sandy paths, single tracks and beautiful, short climbs. The route is generally very easy to drive, but keep in mind that the loamy soil makes it more difficult for rainwater to drain after rainfall. This causes puddles, mud and ruts to form here and there around some points of the route. The route is 32.4 km long and has an elevation gain of 311 meters. The route scores no less than 4.3 out of 5 possible stars.
Recommended bike: a full suspension bike. See our current stock.
The highlight of Overijssel is of course Rijssen. The Rijssen route passes through the De Borkeld nature reserve and is located between the A1 and Rijssen. De Borkeld nature reserve consists of a beautiful forest, extensive heathlands, loam pits, grasslands and fields.
It is a very varied track and it is a perfect route to improve your technical skills. The route is mostly up and down and has virtually no flat sections. The builders have created a super nice flow and in our opinion the route is one of the nicest in the Netherlands. The route is 17.9 km long and has an elevation gain of 276 meters. The route scores 4.3 out of 5 possible stars and is a route that is definitely worth it.
Recommended bike: a hardtail is sufficient for this cool track.
The route of Gelderland is the Rheden route. This route is no less than 49.1 km long, has an elevation gain of 708 meters and is one of the routes of the Veluwe. The route is located in the Veluwezoom national park. It is a very challenging and adventurous route with a lot of variety, straight through the Veluwezoom Park.
The route runs over the moraine in the southern part with tough, rough climbs and long rolling descents. Most of the elevation gain of the route can be found in this section. The route has beautiful, wide stretches where you can drive clearly and comfortably.
An absolutely sublime part is the segment that is designed for those who want a little more challenge. Various artificial drops have been constructed, there are drops of 30, 50 and 80 cm high and this is unique in the Netherlands. The route scores no less than 4.3 out of a possible 5 stars and is therefore one of the most challenging routes in the Netherlands.
Recommended bike: with a full suspension you can do this perfectly.
The most beautiful mountain bike route in Limburg is located in Vijlen. This route is close to the Dutch and Belgian border and is located in a beautiful area. The Limburgse Heuvelland is a region in the south of the Netherlands characterized by a hilly landscape. The Heuvelland is formed by the foothills of the Ardennes and the Eifel and this means that this route has no less than 620 meters of elevation over a 25.7 km length.
There are several mountain bike trails in the area and the routes can easily be linked together. It is therefore even possible to ride the entire area by mountain bike.
We will briefly explain the most challenging route: the Vijlenroute. This is a route for experienced bikers in good condition and contains long, steep to very steep climbs. In the descents, the brake will have to be used properly, so check your gear carefully before riding this route. Due to its red classification, it is recommended that the route is only ridden by experienced bikers. The route scores no less than 4.4 out of a possible 5 stars and is one of the top tracks in the Netherlands.
Recommended bike: a high-quality full suspension with a dropper. Check our current stock.
