When you talk about mountain biking in the Netherlands, you might immediately think of cross country. Very understandable, since that is the most popular discipline in our flat cycling country. However, we certainly do not only sell XC mountain bikes. In this blog we will tell you more about the different mountain bike disciplines and the associated mountain bikes!
A Hardtail is a bike with only a suspension fork and a "hard tail". The advantage of a Hardtail is that it feels stiffer and you can buy a top bike for a slightly lower price. A Hardtail is ideal for our little country if you often ride on a flatter surface.
A fully is often used during rougher off-road rides, a fully is ideal for use on trails where you will encounter several tree roots, braking holes and other bumps. A full suspension also provides a lot more safety on descents because many impacts are absorbed by both the front suspension and the rear damper. A nice additional advantage is that the Fully offers a lot more comfort because the rear damper can absorb many of the blows. The rear shock also provides better traction because the rear tire is pressed into the ground during the ride. Due to its diversity, a fully is ideal for use in our little country but also in countries with better mountains. For example, for people who have suffered a back injury from mountain biking, a fully equipped bike is an ideal solution to still enjoy pedaling in nature.
A step more intense than the standard trail bikes are the so-called Enduros, which have been specially developed for use in so-called Enduro tours in mountainous areas. These full-suspension mountain bikes have extra-large suspension travel of 150 mm or more as standard, fat tires for grip and a stretched geometry specially developed for control during intense descents. The Enduros we sell are almost always equipped with a so-called dropper post, this is a seat post that you can lower down during a descent, this lowers your center of gravity, giving you more control over the bike. This also means that the saddle does not get in the way, causing you to fall during jumps. With an Enduro bike, the emphasis is on heavy and technical trails, often with relatively more descending than climbing. An Enduro is also built more robustly than its XC sisters and this also translates into a higher weight and an Enduro has more suspension travel and wider internal wheels to absorb the jumps and bounce over the rocks.
The Downhill Bike is purely made for one thing: crashing down mountains, jumping over rocks and absorbing big jumps and gabs thanks to its ample suspension travel. These bicycles have extra suspension travel and thick tires so that you maintain control over your bicycle. They are intended for downhill use only. This is a bicycle that does not suit our country and will therefore only be purchased for trips abroad. See for example Whistler Park in Canada or closer to the routes in Winterberg and Willungen Germany.
